FIU SCIS is pleased to announce our newest faculty pictured left to right: Mark Finlayson, PhD MIT 2012; Ruogu Fang, PhD Cornell, 2014; Leonardo Bobadilla, PhD UIUC, 2013.

Arriving in Aug. 2014 Ruogu Fang, PhD, in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University. She received the B.S. degree (highest honors) in Information Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2009. Her research is on the interface of health informatics, computer vision and machine learning. She is particularly interested in sparsity-based modeling for applications such as biomedical imaging. She has published first author papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, including Medical Image Analysis (IF 4.4) and MICCAI (top conference in medical image analysis). Her work related to novel representation, denoising and enhancement methods have earned multiple awards in top conferences and journals, including the Best Paper Award (1 among 1190 accepted papers) at the International Conference of Image Processing in 2010, the Best PhD Poster Presentation at Cornell Engineering Research Conference, and top hottest articles in Medical Image Analysis (April to June 2013).


Arriving in Aug. 2014 Mark Finlayson, PhD is a Research Scientist at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT. His research focuses on representing, extracting, and using higher-order semantic patterns in natural language. He received the B.S.E in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1998, the M.S. in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 2001, and the Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT in 2012. He is general chair of the Computational Models of Workshop series, now in its fifth year.


Leonardo Bobadilla, currently an SCIS faculty member, received the B.E. degree in Computer Engineering in 2005 and the M.Sc. degree in Statistics in 2008 both from the National University of Colombia. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). His research interests include Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Cyber-Physical Systems. In particular, he is interested in the design and deployment of inexpensive systems for solving common robotics tasks such as navigation, patrolling, and tracking. He has received several awards including an Illinois Student Undergraduate Research (ISUR) Graduate Mentor Award 2012-2013 and the Top 10 Computer Engineering in Colombia (ECAES) Award.
